EVENT: HULL DUB CLUB

After taking a year off, the city’s only event dedicated to reggae + sound system culture, Hull Dub Club, makes a welcome return to the nightlife calendar for the end of 2024, courtesy of local promoter/DJ Simma. Previously taking up residence at The Adelphi since 2021, hosting acts like Iration Steppas and Ashanti Selah, the revamped gig-meets-club night moves things down the road to Polar Bear, taking advantage of a larger space and later license

We spoke to the dub organizer himself, Simma, to get the lowdown on what exactly you can expect from a trip down to Hull Dub Club:

“So first things first we don’t compromise on sound quality, especially in the low-end frequencies. That is probably the first thing you’d notice if you haven’t been to our events before. You don’t really realize how lacking the sound can be at other nights until you hear it done properly at an event like ours, especially in Hull where the idea of bringing in your own rig is quite a foreign concept.”

For this upcoming Polar Bear event we have invited Burning Bug Soundsystem to make sure the bass is hitting people’s chests nice and heavy all night long.”

“On the mic, we have a live performance from Sista Oona - a regular collaborator with the sound system’s operator (and music producer) Lewis Bennett. The pair will showcase fan-favourite tracks together such as ‘Truth & Rights’, ‘Difficulties’ and ‘Stand Firm’.”

“We also have the original Yorkshire raggamuffin Parly B making an appearance - a regular face of the festival scene who you may know from collaborations with The Skints and Mungo’s Hi Fi.”

“On the decks we have myself Simma plus very special guests Lioness Power coming over from Leeds, who recently featured on BBC Radio 6 Music for Jamz Supernova’s ‘Women in Soundsystem’ show!”

“I’m really proud to be able to showcase this style of music in an authentic way. The events have a really unique uplifting vibe you can’t really get anywhere else in the area. The artists perform at ground level on the dancefloor, face to face with the audience with the huge sound system pumping out the heavy basslines. There are no egos here, all the focus is on the music and being present in the moment with like-minded people. I hope to see some new faces come down and take a chance on something a bit different for the city!”
