Hull City on Film: A New Exhibition Captures the Heart of Match Days

Hull City on Film, a new photography exhibition by David Jones, lands at HOi Bar, Princes Avenue, this April. Curated by local photographer Victoria Smith, the show offers a raw and nostalgic look at the culture of Hull City football through the unfiltered beauty of 35mm film.

For months, David Jones has captured the highs, the lows, and the in-between moments of match days, not just on the pitch, but in the stands, the pubs, and the streets that surround the stadium. What started as a personal project has grown into a compelling body of work, documenting the faces, the rituals, and the energy that make up Hull City’s footballing identity.

Opening on April 26th and running until May 26th, the exhibition invites fans, photography lovers, and the Hull community to experience the sport from a different perspective. With a collection of powerful images that bring the spirit of Hull City to life, Hull City on Film is more than just football photography. It’s a love letter to the people who shape the game.

I can see all differing emotions from what is happening on the pitch to having a catch-up with an old friend over a pint. The beautiful game really does bring people together and that’s the main reason I wanted to document it

The exhibition will also feature limited-edition prints and photobooks for sale, giving visitors the chance to take home a piece of the action. The timing couldn’t be better. Opening night coincides with Hull City’s last home game of the season, setting the stage for a perfect post-match celebration.

Curator Victoria Smith, known for her work championing local photographers, sees this as more than just an exhibition. “David’s work is both nostalgic and fresh, capturing the essence of match days in a way that resonates  deeply with fans, I really love David’s approach to sports photography, its different and needs to  be seen by the city” said Victoria. “It’s an exciting experience to bring this exhibition to life, and it’s a privilege to share it with the local community, the opening night is 26th April, so we hope  fans will join us after the last home match of the season for a great celebration.”

HOi Bar owner Steve Skoyles has been instrumental in making this event happen, providing space for artists to showcase their work.  “I’m incredibly grateful to Steve for allowing us to host the exhibition at  HOi Bar, he is always so supportive of my work and Hull’s creative community,”

The exhibition will feature a curated selection of David's most striking images, showcasing  moments both spontaneous and deliberate, from the stands to the pitch. The beauty of shooting  with film lies in its unpredictability, this is part of what makes his work so engaging.
