BUTLER WHITES REVIEW

BY LEANNE O’BRIEN

There’s something a bit special about Butler Whites. It’s by far one of our favourite restaurants in Hull and as such, one we always revisit. Anyone who has been to Butler Whites will be well aware of their famous King Prawn Thermidor - I mean, can you even say you have been to Butler Whites if you didn’t order this dish? It was no surprise that when we went for lunch on Saturday, this is what we ordered.

Unfortunately, it’s no longer on the lunch menu as a main, but it still remains on the main menu as a starter. Naturally, we ordered one each but decided to make them mains by ordering a side portion of fries each and a nduja and fior di latte bread to share. We also ordered a delirium beer (for Joss) and a gorgeous Dock St G&T for me; a cocktail consisting of gin, elderflower, pomegranate and mint, shaken and topped up with tonic - delicious!

As always, the king prawn Thermidor was to die for. Plump, juicy prawns in a flavoursome, creamy sauce topped with vintage cheddar and oven baked, and served with bread to mop up the sauce. Perfection!

Butler Whites also do the most amazing fries, thin, crisp and well seasoned. There was also plenty of Thermidor sauce to dip them in too, which was a win. Finally, when the nduja and fior di latte bread arrived, we were pleasantly surprised that it was a full sized pizza bread! We expected it to be a side of bread for the table, so this exceeded expectations. The dough was lovely and soft with a thin base and was topped with a generous helping of beautifully spicy nduja and melted fior di latte (like mozzarella cheese, but made with cow’s milk rather than buffalo).

All together, this made for a wonderfully filling and satisfying lunch. Big up Butler Whites and long live the king prawn Thermidor!
