We spoke to Nang Chicken’s chef, Jonny, to get some more background on the new independent food venture.
“My journey to becoming a chef began when I was 18. I've been working in the catering and hospitality industry all my life, mainly doing front of house management for pub chains. However, in the last three years I've discovered a real passion for the food side of things. The idea for the chicken is for it to have a really nice crunchy flavoursome tempura batter coated in a sweet, tangy, sticky sauce. The menu offers chicken thigh and chicken strips, as well as dishes from a wok station including noodle dishes, fried rice and stir-fried vegetables. Our menu is only small, but everything is cooked from scratch with love and passion, which I think is a big reason why it is doing so well.
I love experimenting with new flavours and dishes, so it was excellent to help develop the recipes for Nang Chicken. Making sure that the flavours where balanced and authentic. I love putting a smile on people's face with my cooking. No matter how hard the job gets, it is always worth it when you know people are enjoying what you’re putting out.
All of the feedback and the response from the public has been amazing. The vast majority of people who are completely new to the Korean fried chicken flavour have been very impressed and those who are already familiar with the flavours have commented on the authenticity of the dishes, which has been really good to hear.”
THE REVIEW
We were lucky enough to sample some of Nang Chicken’s famous Korean fried chicken recently. Nang Chicken interested me early on, as Korean fried chicken isn’t something commonly found in Hull. Having lived in Leeds for 3 years and frequently visiting other cities such as Manchester and Bristol sampling street food, I can say that this is one of the best street food offerings I have eaten.
On our order was; spicyKorean chicken thigh pieces, spicy Korean chicken strips, spicy Korean fried chicken burger, salt & pepper fries and hot stir fry noodles. We also got some wasabi mayo and spicy mayo as extras for dipping!
The chicken was beautifully cooked, the word dry could come nowhere near this food. The meat was juicy and succulent, while the fried batter had a signature crunch. The sauce had a tasty balance between spicy and sweet. It was the perfect amount of sauce across each of the chicken options. Notably even on the burger, there was the perfect amount of sauce, making the burger stay together well without being too sloppy!
The sides were also great, with the salt and pepper chips being the best I have ever tried! Again, they had a great blend of both sweet tangy flavour and spice. The hot stir fry noodles were also great, with a lovely spicy flavour–extremely different to your standard takeaway noodles!
All of the portions were generous sizes, enough to share (if you’re feeling kind!) or a great sized portion if you’re hungry. I couldn’t recommend this independent eatery enough; the food is created with such passion and it really shows through the quality. I will without a doubt be ordering again, and I am eager to try the other flavour of fried chicken, soy garlic.
Treat yourself!
