THE PIPE AND GLASS REVIEW

BY LEANNE O’BRIEN

A Michelin star restaurant is best reserved for those special occasions as they truly are a wonderful dining experience. In Hull and the surrounding area, we have only one establishment with a star; The Pipe and Glass. A cosy, characterful pub in South Dalton. A beautiful, rustic building surrounded by greenery, which is where I headed for my birthday meal.

We began with some of their delicious treacle bread which had a wonderfully sweet honey like taste and worked well with the salted butter. To start, I had the same dish I had 4 years prior; courgette 3 ways - one of my favourite veggies. My favourite of the 3, was the tempura courgette. These were served alongside a beautifully cooked crispy hens egg with a perfect runny yolk and a delightful chorizo jam. Joss chose the smoked haddock fishcake with Yorkshire salami which was wonderfully herby from the dill oil.

The mains were the star of the show. Joss opted for the 30 day aged fillet steak which he described as exceptional and the salt beef pasty accompanying it was a flavour explosion. I chose the Wold Top ale braised ox cheek with marrow bone and hyssop crumb which absolutely blew me away. It was my first time trying ox cheek and loved how tender the meat was and could not get enough of the rich, meaty gravy. The cardamom glazed carrots on the side were also superb, sweet buttery morsels.

To end a fantastic meal, desserts were a must. I opted for the raspberry delice. A light, fruity dessert with a pistachio sponge bottom, aerated white chocolate and a tangy, raspberry sorbet. Joss chose the baked dark chocolate ‘millionaire’ pudding with salted burnt butter Ice-cream which was so rich and luxurious it earnt its millionaire status. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate! Fantastic dining experience. Hats off to The Pipe and Glass team.
