SOLITA REVIEW

BY LEANNE O’BRIEN

Forming part of the Shoot the Bull franchise, Solita is a bar and grill & ‘home to the wagu burger’. The burgers are clearly the focus on their menu and from our experience of Shoot the Bull eateries, that is no surprise as they are known for their excellent burgers.

Solita has a fantastic location with views across Hull Marina, as well as outdoor seating. We were however surprised that aesthetically, little has changed from its days as 1884 Tapas. As Solita’s menu comes across as a casual New York style burger bar, I we expected the environment to reflect to as much and felt there was a juxtaposition with regard to food and setting in that the inside still felt like a fine dining venue.

The cocktails were great and a select few were only £12 for 2. Our favourites included the berry mojito and the Solita. We forewent starters and headed straight for mains. Between us all, we got a KFB, the sliders, bacon double cheese and a fish finger sarnie.

The KFB is a double burger with Monterey Jack cheese, jalapeños and house BBQ sauce, complete with Kentucky fried bacon which was a cool gimmick and tasted great! For the sliders you can pick 3 mini versions of any burger. The first I went for, was the catalan, which was my favourite of the 3 with sundried tomato sauce, chorizo and chilli cheese.

The second was the JD, named due to the JD sauce giving me up market TGI Friday vibes. I enjoyed the crispy onion ring and melted cheese finishing the burger nicely and adding texture. The final was the chilli burger with a ‘very hot’ warning due to the scotch bonnet sauce and chilli cheese.

All were great and could only be made better if they were served in the delicious bretzel buns the large burgers are. Each burger came with a side of standard fries but could be upgraded to halloumi fries, sweet potato fries, poutine and more for an added fee.

Dessert choices were unfortunately lacking with only 2 available. The tiramisu had a lovely layer of cream and topped with Kitkat fingers, however the espresso soaked lady fingers were too strong and soggy towards the bottom! However the lemon cheesecake with raspberry sorbet was fantastic; very fresh, flavoursome and fruity.

Overall, a great casual meal out summed up by one of our party who exclaimed it was ‘one of the best burgers he’s ever had’! Try it out for yourselves and check out the burger hype!
