THE HISPANIST REVIEW
BY LEANNE O’BRIEN
In Hull, there is but one place you must head to if tacos are on the agenda; The Hispanist. We first visited when they first opened and we had the most fantastic meal in which tacos featured and of course did again this time!
The Hispanist is the region’s first Hispanic restaurant, delivering authentic flavours straight from South/Central America, right down to grinding corn to press their own tortillas - now that is dedication and commitment to the cuisine and believe me, it shows!
Joss and I began with a few tapas dishes: he had the ham croquetas, which melted in the mouth and had a lovely crunchy coating. I chose the puntillitas: fried baby squid with allioli which were delicious! The baby squid were whole rather than your everyday squid rings giving extra texture and flavour, whilst the batter covering them was super crisp and perfect with the allioli dip.
The star dishes were of course the tacos. I wanted to try something different from last time but was drawn back to the De Pescado de Estilo Ensenada; beer battered white fish tacos with adobo crema and tangy slaw which are perfect and so fresh. I did however sway to De Pollo Frito tacos too; masa fried chicken with creamed corn salsa, Serrano chill and allioli and I am SO glad I chose these as they were the absolute highlight.
The chicken was fried to perfection and the creamed corn is buttery and addictive! I seriously didn’t want to share and already can’t wait to have more! Absolutely fantastic meal as usual and the best tacos in the area by a mile. My only wish is for the return of the roasted root veg with chicken skin mayo - this dish is phenomenal and I’ll be keeping an eye out hoping for a reappearance!
