TEMPTATION REVIEW

BY LEANNE O’BRIEN

If lockdown has taught us anything, it‘s that supporting local is more important now than ever before. In timely fashion, Hull Kitchens has been born, a new delivery platform created to better support local fan favourite indie kitchens and to make ordering your favourite food much easier. They are significantly cheaper than competing delivery platforms, meaning less commission and more profit for local eateries, which in turn puts back more money into our local economy.

One of their many exciting partnerships is Temptation Bars, a major player in the arena of Hull burgers and we all know that the Hull burger game is strong. Temptation and The Piper collaborated during lockdown, bringing a welcomed edition to the HU5 area and has expanded the Temptation empire to 4 locations: The Piper and St Stephens in Hull, The Dolphin in Cleethorpes and Peaky Blinder bar in Scunthorpe.

With the recent launch of their new menu which is live and trading now, this was a must to sample and a welcomed weekend treat of some damn fine tasting burgers. The new menu is full of clever puns and cult classic references. It consists of beef burgers and buttermilk chicken sandwiches with plenty of sides to choose from, including loaded fries and tater tots and plenty of chicken wings.

Forever wanting to try everything on any menu presented to me, a selection was chosen to represent what Temptation has to offer. From the beef burger section; I chose the ‘Toto, I’ve Got a Feeling We’re Not in Kansas Anymore!’ which includes a 6oz beef patty, American cheese, pulled BBQ pork and Temptation slaw. The beef patties are fantastic quality. Juicy and well cooked. The pulled pork was tender with a tangy, flavoursome BBQ sauce and the slaw was both creamy and crisp, pairing well with the pork. This was all encased in a beautifully soft, brioche bun.

Next up, from the buttermilk chicken sandwich section, was the ‘Chic Mountie’, which they state is inspired by a Canadian breakfast. The buttermilk chicken had a fantastically crispy coating whilst remaining juicy inside and the bacon was cooked well - no undercooked stringyness, which is a huge bug bear of mine with bacon in a burger! The addition of the maple mustard mayo also gave a creamy, kick with a hint of sweetness.

Over to the sides - our love of anything Asian inspired, drew us to the katsu fries, signature rustic fries topped with katsu sauce and citrus pickles. I love their trough like fries, as the design allows them to hold so much more of the sweet curry sauce.

Lastly, the tater tots of choice were the Planted. A large portion of crispy, deep fried cylinders of joy loaded with fresh guacamole, finely diced salsa and citrus pickles. I appreciated the amount of toppings for the tots which was generous and the citrus pickles gave added texture and a sweet but sour kick.

If you’re looking for a sign of what takeaway to get or which burgers to try next, how about giving into Temptation, whilst supporting local at the same time and order through the Hull Kitchens app tonight.
