SUMO PAN ASIAN REVIEW

BY LEANNE O’BRIEN

We visited Sumo Pan Asian at their new Hessle branch. Having enjoyed several takeaways from them, and after a great meal at their Beverley restaurant, we were excited to visit again. However our visit was not as expected. We rang the week prior to see if we could extend to a table of 4 so our friends could join, however were told that it would not be possible. Despite this, when we arrived, we were seated on a table of 4 which we found a bit annoying.

The front of the restaurant looks rather nice complete with a feature cherry blossom tree. However, we were sat at the back of the restaurant which had patio doors which looked out to the back which should have been screened off as all you could see was waste bins and rubbish etc which wasn’t great when eating. Also not much to say regarding service - there wasn’t a very welcoming atmosphere.

Joss chose king prawn toast to start whilst I went for the pork and prawn gyozas both were lovely and presented very well. My only criticism was that the tails were left on the prawns which we’re not fans of. This made us confident the food was going to be better than the atmosphere. Mains arrived; chicken katsu for Joss and salmon bento for me. Joss’ katsu didn’t come with rice and when we questioned it, he was told he could have it as a side, but he felt there was no point as he would have to wait and he likes the rice under the curry. If you go anywhere else, you would expect rice to come with the dish!

My bento was also average, nothing special. Finally when it came to dessert they only had coconut mochi and cheesecake left so we went without which is a shame as I wanted green tea ice cream and mango mochi. It would have been £50 without the eat out to help out scheme and I’m so glad we didn’t pay that as I don’t believe it was worth it.

I’m aware this is only a snapshot and could be a one off experience, so please try for yourselves as I know many others have had a great time here. Remember guys, support local.
